

The 5.56x45 has a slightly larger diameter than the 5.45x39 (5.70mm vs. Either 5.56 or 5.45 would be excellent against medium/large varmints (coyote, etc.), but personally I wouldn't hunt anything above 100lbs with bullets that small.īut assuming your state doesn't limit bullet size, you use a full-length barrel to get the most possible bullet velocity, you limit your shots to extremely close range so the bullet is still traveling fast enough to tumble, and you're willing to follow long blood trails if the bullet doesn't tumble. 243 Win (6.20mm) would be the smallest legal diameter.


In many states the minimum bullet diameter that can be used for hunting deer is 6mm. I would choose neither to hunt medium game or above.
